Bank balance can stretch to surgery – Birkdale Clinic adds extra surgery days to keep up with demand (11 Feb 2009)

Leading cosmetic surgery company the Birkdale Clinic has reported an unprecedented start to the year with more people booking surgical procedures than expected.

Despite the recession and credit crunch, the clinic, which has centres in Crosby Merseyside, Rotherham in South Yorkshire and Hammersmith London, has had to put on extra surgery days to keep up with demand.

In January this year, 102 surgical operations were performed across the three sites, and already around 45 procedures have been booked in for the month of February at the Crosby centre alone.

Marie Jenkins, Patient Co-ordinator at the Crosby centre, said: “We were prepared for a slow start to the year but we have been overwhelmed with the response. In the current economic client, we thought people would not be spending money on cosmetic surgery but the demand has been phenomenal.

“It seems people are using their money from Christmas and many patients who say they want a new look for the new year. We have also spoken to patients during their consultation who are replacing their traditional summer holiday with surgery this year as well.”

This demand reflects the success of the clinic in general, which has seen more than 2,000 surgical procedures performed in 2008 – an increase of 75%.

Now on a par with the top brand names in cosmetic surgery and with top-rated surgeons, the clinic has added more surgery days and now holds regular open evenings where potential patients can view the premises, meet the surgeons and find out more about the wide range of non-surgical and surgical procedures on offer.

Says Marie: “We are growing so quickly now and a lot of it is down to word of mouth, where people who have had a procedure and been happy with it, have recommended us to family and friends and we have just grown and grown.”

The most popular procedure is still breast augmentation, followed by non-surgical treatments like Botox, face-lifts and liposuction.

Notes to Editors

The Birkdale Clinic has established a national reputation for providing highly specialized surgical and medical expertise to both the private and public sector. This constant focus on patient care and delivering the absolute best in surgical capability is the foundation of the clinic’s success. Birkdale was appointed as preferred provider to the Department of Health and the NHS in 2003 and was first to go live as the first Independent Sector Treatment Centre(ISTC) under the Department of Health Growing Capacity scheme in October 2003. The ISTC achieved its objectives and was decommissioned in early 2006.
