International line-up confirmed for 2010 Bury Lions Carnival

A  Rio street band and a fleet of fantasy cars are just some of the highlights of this year’s Bury Lions Carnival, set to take place on 12th June.

The Carnival will have a ‘Made in Bury’ theme, celebrating all things from the borough, and anyone interested is invited to come and take part in both the Parade and the Gala.

The Parade, which starts at 11am on Market Street and will feature a stunning acrobatic centre-piece, costs £10 for non commercial vehicles and £20 for commercial.  Vehicles of any description are permitted as long as they are road legal and correctly insured.

Stalls for displays and exhibitions at the Gala, sited at Trinity Street Car Park and Market Street, are priced at £10 for non-commercial organisations and £20 for commercial.  Throughout the day the Gala site will have stalls, displays, dancing, and a children’s funfair.

Anyone interested in taking part should contact Bury Lions Carnival Chairman Scott Richardson on 07746 180208 or burylionsclub@hotmail.co.uk.

Scott Richardson said:  “Bury has hosted an annual carnival for over 100 years, and we’re hoping to make our 2010 celebration the best yet.  For small fee anyone can come and take part in either the gala or the parade – for which we have some breathtaking floats that should not be missed.”

Councillor Bob Bibby, Leader of Bury Council and Chair of the Local Strategic Partnership, said:  “This year heralds the start of an exciting new chapter for Bury, with a huge redevelopment of the town centre set to complete in the summer.  With our ‘Made in Bury’ campaign proving a great success so far, this year’s Carnival should be a fantastic occasion.”

The ‘Made in Bury’ campaign, launched in 2009, has been supported by many high profile celebrities from the borough.  These include director Danny Boyle, whose films include ‘Trainspotting’ ‘The Beach’ and the muti Oscar winning ‘Slumdog Millionaire, internationally acclaimed rock band Elbow, and Gold medal-winning paralympic athlete Zoe Robinson.

Already home to a world-famous market, Bury town centre will see two major developments completed in the next 12 months – the £80m AskBury mixed-use Townside scheme and The Rock, a 1.6m sq ft retail, leisure and residential scheme including 400 apartments, and anchor tenants Marks and Spencer, Debenhams, and a10-screen cinema.
