Blackpool Signs Up SKV For Some More Media Magic

07.03.2011

SKV Communications has been retained by tourism body visitBlackpool to promote the resort’s February Festival including Showzam! – the UK’s only annual celebration of circus, magic and new variety,  which opens this week and runs until February 27th.

Following on from its work on Showzam! last year , SKV will again be promoting a mixture of ticketed shows, including the international smash hit water acrobatics spectacle SOAP, alongside a host of magic, variety and cabaret shows, fringe events, street theatre and family activities.

Acts set to perform include stars from the critically acclaimed London shows La Clique and La Soiree, the UK’s top female magician Romany, the outrageous comedy troupe Spymonkey,  the surreal  human hosepipe ‘The Spurting Many’, cult DJ duo The Broken Heart and the celebrated cabaret and theatre company Slightly Fat Features.

Showzam! will also play host to Showzam! Central – an area packed with free entertainment including classic sideshows from the 1950s, vintage pinball & slot machines, magic tricks and illusions plus an exhibition of American circus memorabilia.

In addition Showzam! will presenting a range of special talks including Gerry Cottle’s Confessions of a Circus Showman and the ‘Canadian Barnum’, Al Stencell, who will be launching his latest book Circus Ballyhoo at the festival. There will also a range of behind-the-scenes tours of Blackpool’s most famous theatres and venues including the historic Tower Ballroom.

SKV Associate Director Richard Bond said: “To say that Showzam! and the Blackpool February Festival is a bit unusual in terms of arts and culture PR is an understatement.  But as we discovered last year, the concept of a festival dedicated to circus, magic and new variety brings with it a wealth of fantastic PR angles and opportunities.

“It’s also great to continue to our relationship with VisitBlackpool. We worked with them closely during January’s North of England Education Conference, and last year created a campaign focussing on Blackpool business tourism.

“And of course prior to that we were appointed to produce the award winning J’aime La Tour viral film to promote the resort to both UK and international audiences.”

visitBlackpool said: “Last year SKV demonstrated that they were very capable of securing substantial national and regional media coverage for the festival and we are confident that they can deliver a similar campaign for us in 2011.

“We also wanted to utilise the knowledge, contacts and overall understanding of the Blackpool offer that SKV has gained from working with us, and other partners in the resort, over the last few years.”
